Learn fly-fishing basics in one of our free Fly Fishing 101 classes. Perfect for beginners of all ages, the Fly Fishing 101 course includes free lessons on fly casting and outfit rigging.
If you're looking for a great way to get the family together outside, book a free Orvis class to get started. Fly fishing is a sport the whole family can participate in. All ages are welcome to attend this store-based course, but those under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Bring the whole family and learn what this great sport is all about.

FLY FISHING 301
Whether you are a beginner or you are someone that just wants a little guidance on how to become a better fly fisher, nothing beats time on the water with a knowledgeable guide or instructor. Our classes are the next step in your fly-fishing education. Designed to give you a great on-the-water fly-fishing experience, the day's instruction is built around specific techniques and local fisheries.
This year we will be holding a limited number of on the water fly fishing courses. these courses are limited to three people only. They are a great introduction to river fishing as well as benefiting the more experienced angler. The Courses will be held o the River Nidd on A.J.S. Fly Fishers Club Water. This is a stunning and diverse stretch of the river with some very good fishing.
To avoid disappointment please book early, the cost of the course is £99 per person. We hold a limited amount of equipment so if you need waders and so on we may be able to help you out at no extra cost.
We shall cover:
- Fly-casting techniques
- Essential knots
- How to choose your tackle
- Lake entomology (the science of insects)
- How to simplify fly selection—you don’t need hundreds of patterns!
- How to locate fish on a stillwater
- How to play, land, and safely release fish

Leigh has been fly-fishing for over 30 years and spent many years fishing the larger Midlands Reservoirs while he lived in Cambridgeshire but he also spent a lot of time “nipping up north” to fish his beloved rivers. The more he fished the more he realised there was to know so about 8 years ago he decided to follow the Fly-Fishing Instructor route with the Association of Professional Game Angling Instructors (AAPGAI). Now, after a lot of hard work and some tough assessments he is proud to be an Advanced Instructor within this organisation and also holds the position of Event Officer responsible for organising assessment weekends and other events throughout the year.
Leigh soon found that the harder he worked the luckier he got! And his experience and qualifications finally led him to being appointed Fishing Specialist within the Orvis Harrogate store. A dream job for any fisherman, Leigh spends his time introducing people to a fantastic range of products renowned for their quality within the fly- fishing world and passing on knowledge to fishermen both new and more experienced due to the courses that Orvis provides. And when he’s not doing this, Leigh is usually on the river teaching, guiding and introducing people of all backgrounds to the absolute joy of fly fishing.
